Voveran SR (diclofenac sodium sustained release) is a prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) formulated for the long-term management of moderate to severe pain and inflammation associated with chronic musculoskeletal conditions, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Its advanced sustained-release technology ensures a steady plasma concentration, providing consistent therapeutic effect over a 24-hour period. This allows for simplified dosing regimens and improved patient compliance, making it a cornerstone in the pharmacological management of persistent inflammatory pain. It is intended for use under strict medical supervision to maximize efficacy and minimize potential risks.
Features
- Active Ingredient: Diclofenac Sodium (100mg)
- Pharmaceutical Form: Sustained-release (SR) tablet
- Mechanism of Action: Non-selective cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) inhibitor
- Release Profile: Designed for prolonged drug release over 24 hours
- Excipients: Includes hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, and colloidal silicon dioxide
- Packaging: Blister packs of 10 tablets
Benefits
- Provides continuous, 24-hour relief from chronic inflammatory pain, reducing the frequency of dosing.
- Effectively reduces joint swelling and morning stiffness, improving mobility and functional capacity.
- Minimizes fluctuations in plasma drug levels, leading to more consistent symptom control.
- Supports long-term management of degenerative joint diseases, enhancing quality of life.
- Allows for simplified treatment regimens, improving adherence in chronic therapy.
Common use
Voveran SR is primarily indicated for the symptomatic treatment of chronic inflammatory and degenerative forms of rheumatism, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It is also used in the management of acute musculoskeletal disorders, such as low back pain and periarticular conditions like tendinitis and bursitis. Its use is reserved for conditions where prolonged anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects are required, and it is not suitable for the treatment of acute, short-term pain.
Dosage and direction
The recommended dosage for adults is one 100mg sustained-release tablet once daily, taken whole with a sufficient amount of fluid, preferably with or after food to minimize gastrointestinal irritation. The tablet must not be chewed, crushed, or divided, as this would disrupt the sustained-release mechanism. Dosage should be individualized to the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration possible, based on the patient’s response and the severity of the condition. For elderly patients or those with hepatic or renal impairment, a reduced dosage may be necessary.
Precautions
Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disorders (e.g., ulcers, bleeding), cardiovascular disease (e.g., hypertension, heart failure), or renal or hepatic impairment. Periodic monitoring of renal function, liver enzymes, and blood pressure is advised during long-term therapy. Patients should be advised to avoid alcohol consumption and the use of other NSAIDs concurrently. Caution is required in elderly patients, who may be more susceptible to adverse effects. Use during pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester, should be avoided.
Contraindications
Voveran SR is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to diclofenac, other NSAIDs, or any excipients in the formulation. It must not be used in patients with active peptic ulceration, gastrointestinal bleeding, or severe hepatic, renal, or cardiac failure. It is contraindicated in the third trimester of pregnancy and during breastfeeding. It should not be administered to patients who have experienced asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs.
Possible side effects
Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as dyspepsia, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Less frequently, dizziness, headache, and skin rash may occur. Serious but rare adverse effects include gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding, hepatotoxicity, renal impairment, hypertension, and cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction or stroke. Hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, bronchospasm, and severe skin reactions, have been reported.
Drug interaction
Concomitant use with other NSAIDs or corticosteroids increases the risk of gastrointestinal ulcers and bleeding. It may reduce the efficacy of diuretics and antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of renal impairment when used with ACE inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor antagonists. Concurrent use with anticoagulants like warfarin may enhance anticoagulant effect and bleeding risk. Diclofenac may increase plasma levels of lithium, digoxin, and methotrexate. Careful monitoring and dose adjustment are necessary when co-administering these drugs.
Missed dose
If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered, unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. In that case, the missed dose should be skipped, and the regular dosing schedule resumed. Doubling the dose to make up for a missed one is not recommended, as it may increase the risk of adverse effects.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, dizziness, tinnitus, headache, confusion, or acute renal failure. In severe cases, respiratory depression, coma, or cardiovascular collapse may occur. Management is supportive and symptomatic; there is no specific antidote. Gastric lavage and administration of activated charcoal may be considered if presented early. Hemodialysis is not effective due to high protein binding.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15–30°C), in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the packaging.
